Joe Ballay

Joe is a nationally known industrial designer and educator, and co-founder of MAYA Design.  As the head of the Design department at Carnegie-Mellon University, he was instrumental in integrating high technology with traditional graphic and industrial design education.  Even though he has spent most of his career at a high tech firm that he himself founded, he does not consider himself a “tech guy.”  He is fascinated by technology, but believes that it must always be applied with restraint and empathy for the end user, or risk turning into high-powered junk.  Joe has always believed that the job of design is to provide people with satisfying, aesthetically pleasing experiences as it influences ever more of our daily lives.

Joe holds an M.F.A. in design from Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds a B.S. in industrial management from Carnegie Institute of Technology and a B.F.A. in industrial design from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America.
